Baby and Adults Swans and Common Terns July 30, 2010

Feeding sequence

Janice and I took a look around in the afternoon at a couple of places in the Whitby area. After 3 hours we were giving up when I saw the cygnats by the boardwalk.
Away we went to see them. On arrival we were fortunate to see a juv common tern and both adults. The male sat on the handrail preening himself and the female was diving for food for the younster. Then the swans arrived both adults and 3 young cygnats. They made a sneezy sort of sound as they dipped in the water for food.

Marsh with Wood Ducks and more July 25, 2010

Carol and I went for a drive on Sunday night. Lots of stress at work and needed to enjoy some nature. We went up to Reesor Pond and the marsh north of Ajax. Saw the cutest little wood ducks. They were well over a dozen there makng their wheezy noise. One group of 4 wood duck (teenagers) were being followed by the smallest duck. He tried to keep up but was really ignored by the older wood ducks.

Front Yard Birds hummingbird oriole and moreJuly 26, 2010

Lots of activity in my front tree. Between the 2 cardinal families (total of 5 babies), white breasted nuthatch and her young, oriole young, downy woodpecker family and more. My favourites have always been hummingbirds and was able to get male and female. When I was sitting on the porch 2 juv red tailed hawks were flying over the bluffs. The red-tail hawks seem to find me even when not at the office.
Rory is getting better and into much mischief.

Wood Ducks, Green Heron and more July 24, 2010

A small marsh above Pickering held some nice surprised, adult and young wood ducks, one green heron, a pair of blue herons, shorebirds, turtles and more. I also heard a Viriginia Rail deep in the marsh.

Look deep as the green heron was hidden in the branches on the other side of the pond.
